MAN FILES SUIT AGAINST ON-LINE IMPERSONATOR

Singapore businessman David Tan Yeow Hee has filed a defamation suit against Chan Tuck Ying in Singapore's first Internet lawsuit. Chan is alleged to have used Tan's Internet identity to make lewd statements in the social discussion newsgroup soc.culture.singapore. He is said to have used a technique known as 'forging' which means writing messages to a news group, exchanging his name for someone else's. Tan is seeking a public apology, damages and an injunction to prevent Chan from doing it again. So far, Chan has not apologized. The saga began last November when Tan Yeow Hee logged on to the news group to discover that someone had been using his identity to send messages that implied that the sender was a sexual deviant. "I felt that I had been violated," complained Tan. "I even had friends who were not on the Net but who had heard of these messages."
